It's hell week. Of course I would be starting a drama now.
I've wanted to rewatch this one for a while. It came out in 2001, and I remember loving it immensely because it was so good. I didn't understand it much then, only that there was romance, action, adventure, and looked awesome. Now that I'm watching it again, this time as a ninteen year-old instead of a kid of six or seven, I have one question.
WHY.
Why did I have to start now, in the middle of studying for finals, for linguistics (the absolute worst class ever, by the way)? Why did it take me forever to find a good streaming site? And most importantly, WHY IS THIS SHOW SO FREAKING DEPRESSING???
Okay I admit. I honestly don't remember much of the storyline other than a few things here and there. But now that my Chinese is actually good and I'm mature enough to know what's going on, the very first episode felt like an episode from Supernatural in the sense that they both ripped my heart out, squashed it underneath their feet, and stabbed it with sharp objects for good measure and y'know, if this was Supernatural, you'd salt and burn the pieces. The good part of this, though, is that with my Chinese/Canto where it is now, I can understand everything better. The lyrics in the songs, the words they say, the sayings. It's all making much more sense, and I guess I can appreciate the culture that the language reveals.
I also partially figured out why I love this show so much, and it's because I really connect with 哪吒's character. Yes, I was in the shower thinking about it because showers are the mind palace of life.
Beside the point. 哪吒 is just a kid who is impulsive, quick to anger, agile, fierce, stubborn, and difficult to discipline. However, he is also loyal, fun-loving, quick-witted, and brave. If I asked my mother, she would agree with me as well- I embody a lot of his traits. I love action and adventure, and I will always stick up for the people around me. I am full of curiosity, like he is, and I like having my own way. On impulse, I will rush ahead into an adventure or even into battle with only the word 'brave' engraved on my chest; consequences can wait. One of the lines I really like from the opening sequence is, "哪吒, 不怕雷霆震; 誓死, 驅散魔道人 解厄運." I like it because in just few words, the bulk of motivation behind his actions is described. He isn't afraid of upsetting the Imperial Court, whether in the heavenly realm or in the Forbidden City, and he has sworn to defeat all the evil that walks the earth to change fate. That's what his name means. Demon slayer. He is not afraid.
Awesome, now you've gotten to know more of me.
Back to the show studying.
